Easter Egg Hunt challenges
The last couple weeks have provided me a chance to serve my church and it's sister ministries in capacities which I love.
Graffiti 2, a new ministry in Motthaven in the South Bronx, had an Easter Egg HUnt on the saturday before Easter. There were 5000 eggs sprawled across 3 different fields. This is an area where poverty and crime are high, but where a young guy has answered the call to ministry, and has started with after school programs, much like graffiti did over 20 years ago.
I was asked to help with registration, and was glad to be able to offer my services, as over 300 kids and their families gathered to enjoy a variety of activities, magic show and the amazing egg hunt.
It was a very hot day, and the registration line got longer, people's tempers got hotter. A few times I wondered whether someone might deck me, as I kindly told them they needed to make their way to a second line, in order to get a registration bracelet for their kids.
A few hours later, I'm sure some people weren't sure why they were in line still.
It was a wonderful outreach to a much forgotten and needy neighborhood. Andrew and Graffiti2 won't know the effects of it for sometime, but although I had to deal with some pretty angry people, and wondering how I might smooth things out sufficienty, I loved it all. I was glad to be kind and firm and represent Christ's love. And I look forward to more such opportunities.
